For a holiday just more than a century old, Father’s Day has become an entrenched tradition and an economic force to be reckoned with. Each year millions of Father’s Day cards flood the American mail system, articles flood lifestyle blogs and magazines with advice for how best to celebrate, and retailers see more than $1 billion spent annually on Father’s Day gifts.
When and Where Did Father’s Day Begin?
Father’s Day was originated by Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, the daughter of a Civil War veteran who raised both her and her five siblings as a single parent after her mother’s death. The story goes that she had the idea during a sermon on Mother’s Day in 1909.
She enlisted the support of local religious leaders and, on June 19, 1910, the first Father’s Day was celebrated. In 1972 Pres. Richard Nixon signed legislation designating the third Sunday of June as Father’s Day granting it the status of a national holiday.
Not Just Another Cookout Or Restaurant
When you look at Father’s Day dinner recommendations in publications (such as the Food Network), you will see an array of “manly” suggestions… usually centered around steak or BBQ. As we have pointed out in the past, the flaw in these is that they usually put Dad on duty doing the cooking. While grilling can be great fun, this should be a day he truly gets to relax and be pampered. In a sea of similar options, a Father’s Day dinner cruise or Father’s Day brunch on our yacht stands out as a truly unique and memorable experience.
Just imagine… instead of a restaurant or backyard cookout, you’ll have a rotating selection of NYC’s most iconic landmarks as backdrop to your photos. This includes locations like Ellis Island, the Brooklyn Bridge, Battery Park, Astoria Park, the Statue of Liberty, and the Williamsburg Bridge. Coupled with our three-course buffet dinner, it makes for a four-hour tour you will not soon forget.
Whether you are planning on a small, intimate gathering or a larger group, our expert event planners will help you find the options that best serve both your needs and your budget.
