It was in Philadelphia of July 4, 1777 that the first organized celebration of the Fourth of July was held. Reporting on the event by the Evening Post gives details on the first fireworks displays of that very night.
“The evening was closed with the ringing of bells and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks (which began and concluded with thirteen rockets) on the Commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.”
By 1870, when Congress enshrined July 4th as an official national holiday, it was already famed for its spectacular explosions.
