Black Friday has meant many things over the years… the first being in 1869 denoting the crash of the American Gold Market. It was not until the 1950s that it began to be applied to the shopping crush the Friday after Thanksgiving – and then, only in Philadelphia where it was often associated with theft as well as massive crowds. It did not become a mainstream event at the national level until the late 1980s, at which point it began to evolve into its present form.
Now it is a time of massive sales, and even more massive lines. The image of chaos and crowds fighting over price deals is now so embedded in our culture that there are even comedies and horror movies about Black Friday. In short, it is an awful lot of work to chase those deals.
