Every year the holiday season ends with New Year’s Eve into New Years Day. Many of us spend it with friends and family getting together at someone’s home to share some champagne and watch the ball drop. Some of us will opt to make the evening extra special by going out to a lovely dinner or even booking tickets to a special and memorable celebration to ring in the New Year.
We often take the fact that we celebrate the New Year for granted. After all, it just seems like a natural call for a celebration. And the fresh start of a new year seems like the perfect time to resolve in making a change in your life or striving to do better.
It all had to start somewhere though. So, who created New Year’s Resolutions?
Who Created New Year’s Resolutions?
We may never know who the first person or civilization was to create the concept of New Years Resolutions, as it very well could be lost to time. However, from the records we do have it appears that the ancient Babylonians (more than 4,000 years ago) were the first to incorporate New Year’s Resolutions into their observance of the new year.
While we celebrate from December 31st to January 1st, the Babylonians would celebrate over the course of 12 days as winter ended and spring began. They viewed the start of the year as the time where crops were planted.
The Babylonians would make a promise to their gods to make good on their debts that have incurred over the course of the previous year – which is viewed as the start of the New Year’s Resolutions tradition. Julius Caesar, while ruling ancient Rome, would later move the New Year to what is now January 1st.
What Is The #1 New Years Resolution?
This past year in terms of popular New Year’s Resolutions may surprise you. According to a survey conducted by Forbes Health/One Poll, improving mental health scored higher overall than improved fitness or losing weight. Nearly half of respondents wanted to improve their mental health with 45% responding as such, followed by improved fitness at 39%, losing weight at 37% and improved diet at 33%.
For many, improving mental health means reducing stress in our lives. A great way to build toward that is to find the joy in life by indulging in the fun and unforgettable experiences that Skyline Cruises can provide any time of year.
