Citi Field
Take in a Mets game before or after your Skyline Cruise. Citi Field is very close to the marina, making it very convenient when game times coincide. Inspired by the retro ballpark trend begun by the Baltimore Orioles’ Camden Yards, Citi Field has a more intimate feel than its predecessor, Shea Stadium. About 42 percent of its seats are in the lower deck, putting fans closer to the game. The Clubhouse area in right field on the field level gives attendees a great view of the action. Exclusive club areas include the Ebbets Club and Delta Sky Club, both of which are behind home plate, and the Acela Club, which is in the left field corner. Citi Field also features the Mets Museum and a Hall of Fame display.
The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center
If tennis is your game, visiting the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center is a must. Named for the legendary tennis champion, this complex has 22 outdoor courts, 13 field courts, 5 practice courts, and 4 stadiums, including the 23,000-seat Arthur Ashe Stadium, making the National Tennis Center the largest tennis complex in the world. The home of the annual U.S. Open tennis championship, the Center holds programs for youth and adult tennis players.
NY Hall of Science
The New York Hall of Science got its start during the 1964-1965 World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows Corona Park and is regarded as one of the best science museums and exhibition centers in the U.S. In addition to its place as a public museum for kids and adults, it provides resources for schools on the grammar school, high school, and college levels.
Queens Zoo
A part of Flushing Meadows Corona Park, the Queens Zoo includes an aviary and a sea lion pond. The zoo has various year-round programs for children, plus a summer camp for kids ranging from pre-K to high school.
Voelker Orth House
Built in 1891, the house was in the Voelker family from 1899 until 1995 when Conrad Voelcker’s granddaughter Elisabetha Orth bequeathed her estate to turn the house into the Voelker Orth museum. A New York state landmark since 2007, it presents the experience of an immigrant family’s home in the 1980s. The facility features a bird sanctuary and a Victorian garden. Workshops, tours, performances, and talks are offered year-round.
Queens Botanical Gardens
Owned by the City of New York, what is now the Queens Botanical Garden originally began as “Gardens on Parade,” a five-acre display in the 1939-1940 New York World’s Fair. Local residents saved the exhibit and turned it into The Queens Botanical Garden Society in 1946. In 1961, it moved to its current location on Main Street in Flushing where it now occupies 39 acres of Flushing Meadows Corona Park. Some of the original plantings from 1939 still exist, including two blue atlas cedars at either side of the tree gate entrance. Among the exhibitions are a bee garden, herb garden, wedding garden, rose garden, arboretum, perennial garden, and an art gallery. The garden operates year-round.
