Fall is a special time of year in New York when the air is crisp and the weather is mild, so we can enjoy going out with friends and loved ones in a light sweater or hoodie and take it all in. And what could be a more perfect way to spend an Autumn day than to go out on a cruise to enjoy some fine dining and see the gorgeous lit-up skyline of Manhattan from the Skyline Princess?
With the night sky coming earlier and earlier as the days go by, Skyline Cruises provides a wholly unique look at the city skyline covered in lights while you enjoy a gourmet dinner, drinks, or just focus on the sightseeing. And, of course, on our lunch or brunch cruises you have the expansive views that daylight brings. While you’re out with us on the Skyline Princess, you’ll want to take pictures to cherish and share with your family and friends as well. So, what makes for a good cityscape photo?
What Makes A Good Cityscape Photo?
One of the first thoughts that might cross your mind when taking pictures aboard any cruise ship could be: “how is it possible to take a clear, crisp picture when ships like the Skyline Princess are in motion?” Though you will find all the levels of our ship to be comfortable and deliver quality, memorable experiences… the first deck has the smoothest movement and will help you have the best results when you’re taking pictures of the cityscape or having your party’s pictures taken with the cityscape behind you.
We also recommend you take your photos in landscape mode to maximize the amount of Manhattan’s gorgeous skyline you capture in your photos. You are also invited to bring a tool with you on board such as a selfie stick, which will open up a number of picture opportunities that would otherwise be impossible.
How Do You Take City Photos At Night?
While we do recommend that people explore the tips provided by the Digital Photography School (as well as tips tailored specifically for the type of cell phone you use), there are some basic tips to keep in mind that may sound counter-intuitive. One such tip is to try and take pictures before it’s well after dusk and fully dark out. The settings on your phone and the filters you use may help to enhance your pictures but, as dusk approaches, the colors in the sky can lend themselves to some truly beautiful and unique pictures that you, your family, and friends will want to keep going back to.
Photography experts call the last hour before sunset (and the hour after sunrise) “golden hour” or “magic hour” for a reason – it produces beautiful lighting for video and photographs. So, check those sunset times if you’re sailing one of our dinner cruises and plan to capture it during your Skyline experience.
